DEFAMATION.
A GOSSIP PAYS FOR EXPERIENCE.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night.
At the Police Court to-day Louisa Harris claimed £3OO damages from William Osborne for defamation of character. Plaintiff had been engaged to Peter Doherty, to whom defendant had repeated a rumor that Miss Osborne had had an
illegitimate child. No justification was put forward. Justice Denniston said the statement had not been made maliciously, and awarded £25 darpages.
