SLY-GROG CASE.
TREATING FRIENDS IN A PROHI BITION DISTRICT,
(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. The hearing of the charge of sly grogselling preferred against Humphries, owner of tho Fortrose Hotel in Mataura district, where no-licenso was carried, was concluded to-day, the S.M. reserving his decision. Tho lino of dofonce was that defendant treated some friends from the remains of tho stock, but took no money, nor did he expect it; that the treating was done in the bar, because it was tho most convenient place, and that the Ploughing Match Association, holding a dinner in tho bouse, were the owners and importers of some of the liquor seized. It was admitted that the defendant bad returned quantities of liquor to the wholesale houses.
