NIWARU ENQUIRY.
JUDGMENT RESERVED. (Per Press Association.) Napier, last night. The Niwaru enquiry was concluded today, Counsel addressing the Court on behalf of the captain and officers of the vessel, contended that the evidence failed to disclose any default on their part, and that they were entitled to have their certificates returned to them, as all reasonable caution and good seamanship had been exercised.
The Court then adjourned until Friday, when they will state on what date the finding will be made known. PUMPING OPERATIONS.
The pumping operations on the Niwaru to-day have kept down the water to the level of the shaft, but further progress was blocked by cargo. A lighter was loaded with coal and a quantity of undamaged Wellington and Napier cargo was removed. To-day the diver went down to shift some of the cargo to allow of a second suction pipe to be placed in position, and another mat will probably be fixed tomorrow over the whole of the damaged part of the bold.
