Hawora, last night. A representative public meeting decided to hold an industrial exhibition from February 19th to 26th, 1904. A telegram was read from tbe Premier, accepting nomination as patron. An executive and sub-committee were set up. Wellington, last night. Mahuta to Whero Whero, a member of the Executive Council, arrived from the Waikato last night. He will be sworn in as a member of she Legislative Council this afternoon.

In the Supremo Court sentences were passed on Henry Ward, for theft, nine months’ imprisonment ; John Bibby, theft, probation for 12 months, and ordered to pay ill towards the cost of prosecution; Henry Stanley, incest, four years’ imprisonment. Dunedin, last night. The hairdressers and tobacconists, at a large meeting last evening, protested strongly against the Saturday half-holiday on the grounds that it would dislocate business, and was not asked for by the public. The meeting also objected to a hotelkeeper being able to sell cigarettes, etc., on the statutory half-holiday, as was at present done. The resolutions are to be sent to the city members. The body of a newly-born female child was discovered in a right of way off High street yesterday evening. A woman residing in the neighborhood called a constable’s attention to a suspicious-looking brown paper parcel, which had been left in the locality, and tho constable on examining it found the body, which he removed to the police station. An inquest will be held.

Hokitika, last night. The auxiliary schooner Emma Sims, which stranded on the beach three weeks ago, was successfully launched into the Hokitika river to-day,
