DUNEDIN NEWS.

DEATH BY STRANGULATION. (Per Press Association^) Dunedin, last night. At the inquest on the body of the child found dead in' the right oi-way, off High street on Monday, tne medical evidence was to the effect mat the child had been born alive. It had breathed, and the mark round the neek was the result of pressure before death, showing that the child had been strangled, vvitn possibly some suffocation. The jury returned a verdict mat death was caused by strangulation by some person or persons unknown. COLDER WEATHER.

A thaw sot in at Roxburgh to-day, but. there were signs of frost in the evening. Reports from the country indicate that the loss of stock may not prove so severe as was feared if the thaw sets in soon. At Watson and Shennan’s Puketoi stations there is still eight inches of frozen snow on the ground. A large number of sheep are being fed with sheaves, and turnips are being snow ploughed.

SPORTING. At the first meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club Committee the last year’s officials were re-appointed. It was resolved to give the Barne amount in stakes aslast year. The sum of £lO was voted towards the publication of a turf record.

The City Council and Drainage Board met in conference to-night to consider a difficulty that has arisen in connection with the application of the Drainage Board to be recognised as a local body under the Tramways Act. After much, discussion it was decided to appoint a subcommittee of each body to report. The oommittee meet to-morrow, and it ia hoped an agreement will be arrived at.
