A PLATELAYER'S DEATH.
AN ALLEGED SPREE.

An inquest was held this afternoon aa to tbe circumstances of tbe death of John Meager, platelayer, killed on the railway near the Willow Bridge on Saturday. Major Keddell was coroner. i The evidence of the driver of the express train to Christchurch was that deceased fell from a slight rise alongside the line in front of the engine, and struck the buffer and was killed. Another platelayer named Gardiner, who was with deceased, gave corroborative evidence. Tbe driver and fireman of the express said the men were under the influence of liquor, and Constable Christie arreeted Gardiner for being drunk when he reached Studholme by the express. Immediately after the accident two bottles of beer were found on a trolly near the scene of the accident, and an empty whisky bottle near tbe spot, which was full when leaving Studholme at 1.30, and which had been purchased at the junction The jury returned a verdiot that de- , ceased met his death accidentally, and no blame was attached to anyone. The coroner disagreed with the finding.
