St. Peters’s Cathedral was cleared at hood, when the lying in-state concluded. The interment of Pope Leo commenced at 7, aud finished at 8.15. Two thousand priests, invited by the Cardinals, celebrate the funeral services from Tuesday to Friday. Cardinals Rampolln, Gotti, Serafiuo, Vaunutel.i, aud Oreiglia are the most prominent aspirants for the Pontifical chair.

Capitularies, escorted by a body o£ Noble Guards, followed by Papal dignitaries and prelates, here tho body to the Choir Chapel, where Cardinals occupied tlie stalls on either side of the bier, diplomatists and nobility filling the galleries. Alter chanting prayers, the absolution was pronounced. The face was covered with a white veil, and the body with a red silk pall placed in a cypress coffin, with three purses containing coins aud medals equal to tho years of Pontificate ; also parcbmont panegyrics. Officers commanding tho Swiss Guards and Pupal Gendarmes kissed the feet before piacing tile lid oil the coffin, whioh was scaled aud encased in a leaden casket, and finally enclosed in an elm coffin, deposited in the saroophagus outside the Choir Chapel until tho permanent tomb is ready. The whole scene was most solemn and tonching, and many wept. Bells tolled throughout. It is estimated that 355,000 witnessed the lying in state.

Per Press Association, Wellington, last night. Archbishop Redwood has received the following oable from Rome : “ Condolences on the occasion of tho uea?h of our Sovereign the Pontiff, which you transmitted in tho name of the Bishops and faithful of your country havo been received with great satisfaction by tho most eminent fathers, tho Cardinals.—(Sigued) L. Cardinal Oreiglia."
