ATHLETICS.

(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night.

The football grounds were undpr water and heavy rain and a hail shower fell yesterjlay afternoon. The referee in the Christchurch-Old Boys match decided that the ground was fit to play on, and this was the ouly match played, Christchurch winning by eleven points (a goal and two tries) to nil.

Tbe Timaru to Christchurch Cycle Road Race was decided yesterday in a heavy south-west gale. liaiu bad been falling for two days previous, and tbe roads were in an appalling mess, but forty-nine faced the starter. A. Calder wa3 the only scratch man starting, hi 3 nearest attendants being R. Arnst, ten minutes, and J. Arust and W. Congreve fifteen minutes. The limit men set a good pace for the first twenty miles, taking just over an hour. Then river-beds and snow covered roads siowed them down. Ashburton (half way) was reached by S. Barrow with 25 minutes start, and J. Arnst, after riding four hours and a-half. R. Arnst was three minutes behind the latter, and caught the leaders at Rakaia, but got tbe cramp and had to stop. Barrow and J. Arnst rode together till a mile and a half from the finish, when Barrow made an effort, and won by ono minute, R. Arnst third, eight minutes behind the winner. R. Jones, H. Ritchie, and H. P. Arnst also finished. J. Arnst did the fastest time, 7hrs 20mins; P«. Arnst, 7hrs 22min’s; Barrow, SAjmins. The time was generally considered wonderful. The placed men finished well, and half an hour afterwards seemed quite fit again. J. and R. Arnst will represent the colony in the Warnambool-Melbourne run.

Nelson, last night. The football match Canterbury v. Nelson was played in perfect weather, and re suited in a draw, neither side scoring. The visiting forwards showed better combination than the local men, but the (Nelson backs prevented the visitors securing any advantage. During the first spell Nelson was mostly on the defence, but in the second both sides attacked but were unable to cross the line,
