FOOTBALL

TOKOMABU V. TOLAGO.

The Waiapu Eugby Union Cup matches were continued on Saturday last, when Tokomaru and Tolago again tried conclusions, the former proving victorious by 5 to 4 points. The game was the finest exhibi-

tion of football witnessed on the Coast this season.

Mr B. 8. Williams had charge of the whistle, and on the whole controlled the game very creditably. Tokomaru got into Tolago’s quarters from the kick-off, but Beynolds, by a good punt, managed to shift the ball to the other end of the field. The local forwards, however, were not to be denied, and from a fine piece of work by E. Murphy and Fairlie, the latter was enabled to score, Gerrard added the major points. The blacks r (Tolago), playing pluokily, kept the oval in neutral territory for a while, but their opponents bore down on them, and caused them to force twice in succession. Shortly after this the whistle sounded halt-time, the first spell ending Tokomaru 5, Tolago 0. The seoond spell opened with a series of scrambles. Beynolds did his side a lot of service by sound defensive work. From a scrum in tho Black and White’s 25, Beynolds passed to M. Murphy, who potted a fine goal. On resuming, Tokomaru continued on the aggressive, and from some fine line work by the local forwards Torere Matakiki crossed the line, but the score was disallowed, as spectators and players were mixed up, the referee being unable to see who had possession of the ball. A little, later the whistle sounded, leaving Tokomaru victoriou. by 5 points to 4, For Tokomaru Potae at full was very safe, and of the other backs Gerrard, Mulligan, and Piper were the best. Of the forwards Fairlie, E. N. Murphy, Aorere Matakiki, and J. Hate played sterling games. For the losers Beynolds and M. Murphy were best of the backs, and Hura, Hames and B. K. Murphy of the forwards. The game was played in a very friendly spirit, and was witnessed by about 300 rtonnlft.
