NUMEROUS FIRES.
HOTEL DESTROYED.
£Per Press Association/); Napier, last night. Last night’s fire in Newton’s block was ihe most serious in Napier for some yoars. ]?he brigade did splendid work. The insurances on the buildiDg are £1750, divided as follows : Norwich Union £SOO, North Queensland £4OO, Standard £250, South British £6OO, Newton’s stock £SOO in the Imperial and £250 in the Norwich Union, Bennett and Querrie’s stock £IOO in each Alliance and Phcenix, Dental Company £250 in the South British, Katapoi Woollen Company £3OO in the New Zealand, the City Band’s instruments (the majority saved) £3OO in the United. During the progress of the fire a member of the fire police, George Presling, was arrested on a charge of pilfering goods. He was brought before the Court to-day and remanded. Thames, last night. A fire occurred yesterday in the grocery establishment of William Scott, who lost heavily by fire about a year ago. The fare was discovered by policemen, and it then bad a good hold, dense smoke filling every portion of the building. The fire brigade a«ain did splendid work, and soon had the fire under control, but the whole of the interior of the shop and its contents were gutted. A large amount of damage was done. The stock was insured for £1250, £750 being in the United, and £SOO in the Victoria. The building was the property of the Hon. Mr McGowan, and was insured for £6OO in the North British. New Plymouth, last night. A six-roomed house in Ngariki road, Rahotu, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday night. It was owned by Mr Billing and occupied by the schoolmaster. No-insurances are available. I Auckland, last night.
The Harp of Erin Hotel, on the Great South road, was destroyed by fire last night. . . The Harp of Erin Hotel was owned by Hancock and Company, and occupied by Mrs Leonard. The insurances on the house are £BOO in the Imperial and £SOO in the Now Zealand ; on the stock and furniture of the hotel £690 in the South British. Mrs Leonard's private furniture was reinsured for £3lO in the Standard. Nothing was saved, the hotel being burnt to the ground,
