A GREAT, SUCCESS,

One of the best variety entertainments given in Gisborne attracted a large audience at the. Theatre Royal last night. Prof. Lewis is one of the cleverest conjurors ever seen by a colonial audience. His numerous tricks were performed with a dexterity that amazed the audience and also provoked much merriment. The Professor’s plate and dish spinning evoked very hearty applause. The thought reading of Madame Lewis created a deep impression, and was much marvelled at. Miss Ivy Rickards made a great hit with her singing of 11 Dorothy Dean, and in response to a warm encore she gave the clever ditty, “ Rosie Posie, which was much appreciated. Later on she created much enthusiasm with her fetching coster song, containing a number of local hits. In response to a hearty encore Miss Rickards gave “ The Factory Lass.” Miss Violet Wilton, the clever Australian soprano balladist, captivated her audience with the singing of Mansion of Hearts,” for which she was encored. She gave a clever interpretation of “ Wlien the Harvest days are over.” Other excellent numbers were “The Serenade” and “Sweet Sixteen,” for which she was warmly applauded. Miss: Nora Riley, in the impersonation of an Irishman scored a great success with the rendering of two Irish ditties, “George McGee ” and “ Biddy, McCarthy.” She is an excellent mimic, and with her Irish brogue and witticisms, caused ment. The entertainment was concluded with a very laughable farce, “ l'he Haunted House,” in which Professor Lewis showed himself to be a comedian of high merit. Madame Lewis and Miss Ivy Rickards also made the most of their parts. The clever pianist, Mr Sidney Guh|h, gave the music-loving people a great treat in the splendid manner in which he played his pieces. The Company will conclude their Gisborne season to-night, and judging by the success last night should be greeted with a crowded house. An entire i change of programme is promised. ..
