DUNEDIN, last night,

At the conference of what is known as the flat boroughs—Caversham, South Dunedin, and St. Kilda —a resolution was adopted in favor of amalgamation of the three boroughs into one, and Mayor and two (Councillors from each were appointed a committee to report on the matter.

Samuel McAuley, a- young man who had his leg amputated through meeting with an accident on tne Roxburgh Jubilee dredge, died in the hospital to-day. WELLINGTON, last night.

A meeting of retail traders tonight decided to wait upon the Premier to express disapproval of certain clauses of the Shops and Offices Bill. The meeting particularly objected to the proposal regarding a compulsory half-holiday, on Saturday, and the payment, of overtime, as suggested in the Bill. Objection .was also taken to six o’clock closing being compulsory. S. Giles, a young married man of Okau, was killed to-day. while hauling logs to Bartholomew’s sawmill. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the iilquest. The licensed victuallers have decided to renew- the application for 11 o’clock licenses at the quarterly meeting of the Licensing- Committee in September, Petitions protesting against the inconvenience of 10 o'clock licenses are being circulated for signature. MASTERTON,. last night.

.The Chamber of Commerce to-day, appointed a committee to obtain information regarding the capital required and other particulars and conditions of a proposal to establish Woollen-mills at Masterton. .The Chamber decided to ask Mr Hogg, M.H.R., to interest himself with others to enable Government to grant water rights for power purposes to private individuals or companies. The Chamber decided to affiliate .with the British Decimal Association in -London, with the view, of Working for the adoption of the decimal system of weights, measures, and coinage.. A committee was appointed to consider what action could be taken to have the legislation regarding the recovery of debts ’amended.

Mrs R. D. Bagg, an old resident of Masterton, 71 years of age, died to-day. She arrived in Wellington in the s.s. Westminster in 1855, and came to Masterton in the same year CHRISTCHURCH, last night.

At a meeting of motor cyclists, convened by the Christchurch Cycling , Club, to-night, it was decided that a motor-cycle branch be formed in connection with the Club, bers to have separate representation on the Club’s Executive. It was stated there were forty motor cyclists in Cpristchurch and suburbs, not counting motor-cars.
