EARTHQUAKES IN AUSTRALIA.

By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Melbourne, July 15. A severe earthquake was felt at Illowe, in the Western district, last night. Wooden buildings were violently shaken, and bottles dislodged from the shelves. The tremor appeared to travel from northwest to south-east, and lasted several seoonds. Shocks oceurring at the same time were felt at Camperdown, River Nook, Prinoetown, Peterborough, Newfield, Scott’s Creek, and Port Fairy.

At Warrnambool the shook was even greater in intensity than that experienced in April, though not so prolonged. The entire community was thrown into a state of alarm. Terrifying rumbling noises accompanied the shock, which lasted four seconds. Women ran screaming into the street. Greater damage was done than on a former visitation. The plaster of ceilings fell, cornices and ornaments on publio buildings were hurled to the ground. Three oroßses on the St. John Presbyterian Church fell into the churchyard. A large iron water-tank at an hotel was twisted round on its foundations and burst.

The seismograph of the Observatory recorded tremors about the time of the earthquakes in the Western Distriot. The vibrations registeredjasted twelve minutes, but,only for a few seconds was the shook sharp. Many windows were broken at Warnambool and walls cracked. The spire of St. Joseph's Catholic Church was thrown out of plumb. Monuments in the cemetery were shifted and some overthrown.
