SEDDON’S MEAT CAMPAIGN
'AMERICAN. BEEF TRUST’S DEEP
CONCERN. *
FURTHER INFORMATION
(Per R.M.S. Sierra, at Auckland.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 25. ' The New York Herald of June 7th says
The BeCf Trust is deeply concerned about the announcement cabled through Prime Minister Seddon that New Zealand is about to make an aggressive fight for the meat trade of Great Britain. 1
To-day the American Trust supplies two-thirds of the fresh beef used in Great Britain. Market reports show that it is selling better grades of beef fifty cents a hundred pounds cheaper in London and Liverpool than in this city. It is rf not generally understood here that icing is practically unknown in Great Britain. Meat, vegetables,; and fruit are not kept as here. Exposure would benefit the marketing of none but the best qualities of beef, and that is an additional reason - for the American Beef Trust picking out the phqicest cuts for the foreign market. It is further stated that the New Zealand authorities • intend to make use of between seventy-five and one hundred packing houses already available within their borders, and pay a fixed sum for 1 each carcase, for the'killing, freezing, packing, and shipping. The same meat is to be sold at a price barely covering the costs. The first depots to be established are to be in Liverpool, Glasgow, Manchester, and Cardiff.
