if- per Press Association . .CHRISTCHURCH, last nighty -‘'■■Flclt, Iladelstone and Fcron, three local railway employees, were charged this morning with stealing a •quantity of goods from the railway premises. On the conclusion of the case for the prosecution, Flett pleaded guilty, and was remanded until Tuesday. A sentence of probation ■ was applied for. The Magistrate ordered a report, adding that lie could not hold out much hope for proba,tipn keing granted. The Crown Prosecutor opposed probation, on. the ground that accused participated in an organised conspiracy to loot, the railway sheds. The case against. Iladelstone, another railway hand, is now proceeding. . 1 AUCKLAND, last night. The San Francisco mail steamer Ventura arrived from Sydney at 4.36 this morning. Owing to the plague and small-pox in Australia, a strict quarantine .is enforced. The mails are being fumigated No visitors will be allowed on the steamer A new method of dealing with >’ • stowaways has been introduced at • lAuckland. Three stowaways on the ’Frisco mail steamer Ventura were committed to gaol to-day until the incoming steamer arrives on Wcd- ‘ nesdav. They will then be returned to Sydney, whence they came.
