ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE.
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night.
The hon. secretary for the colony for the Society for the Advancement of Science, has received instructions from Sir Joseph Ward that the Government is disposed to render handsome assistance to the local committee arranging for the meeting here in January next. Government will place £509 on the estimates and all printing will be done free of cost. Railway passes will be issued to all visiting members ; their secretary will be authorised to frank all correspondence, and any assistance the Departments can render will be cheerfully given. LICENSING CASES.
The licensee of Shade’s Hotel, in North-East Valley, now closed owing to the carrying of prohibition in Chalmers, was lined £5 and costs for supplying liqqor on Sunday. A charge against the licensee of the Salutation Hotel, one of the reduced houses in the city, was dismissed as the son who served the liquor was not authorised to do so. A uREAI'ER city. pose of enquiring us to the desirability or ' Ottterwise of takiug steps to bring about the amalgamation of the city of Dunedin, and all or auy of tne adjacent boroughs, and to indicate the basis on which suoh amalgamation should take place. A representative oominittee oi nine was appointed. DREDGING. The Holtomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company wasbed up 1270 z 2dwt for the month of June.
