WATER SUPPLY.
(To the Editor Gisborne .Times. Sir,— Has it ever occurred to the Borough Council that, as Mr Mestayer’s scheme for water supply for the borough is only a scheme for conservation of the rahnali. there might be many heads of valley* not
oniy much nearer to Gisborne, but with a greater capacity, a greater height, and a greater holding power than that of the Waihirere valley ? As I understand it, we novices have always considered the Waihirere as the best source, as it is the onlycreek handy to town that is pure and constantly running; but Mr Mestayer does not consider these questions at all, but goes higher up the creek than the running water and finds a place for a reservoir in a dry, fern-clad valley, such as are common about here. There may be, and most likely are, many places better suited for a reservoir if they were sought for. If the Council are going in for a catchment and reservoir scheme why not, before proceeding with the present scheme, offer a reward for information of any suitable place for such a purpose, and then get their engineer to report on them, and see if some are not either better or cheaper than Waihirere ?—I am, etc.,
