WAIROA DAIRY FACTORY.

At a meeting of tbo directors of tho Wairoa Dairy Factory Company Mr Brown road a copy of a letter he had written to Mr J. Haisman (now in Gisborne), who was tho lowest teridcred for tho erection of tho factory when tenders woro called last year, asking if ho would still consent to tako up tho contract. Mr Haisman’s reply was then read, in which ho stated he was so situated that it would bo impossiblo for him to take up tho contract.

Mr Brown road tho following report on sites for tho factory : At tho directors meeting of 10th December private enterprise was invited for sinking trial well. Three were made. . . . All three were successful as regards water. Some time after they were finished Mr McGowan, Acting Commissioner, visited tho district, and, while approving of tho water of tho whole throe, condemned them all as not central enough, especially the upper Turiroa road one, not having land enough as well. Ho said the factory should be us near tho bridgo as possible, so us to suit tho present, and future cow-milkers and creameries. There is a site close to the bridge, but it is too small and not available. On looking well round, ho chose as the best site a corner at the cross-roads of FrasortownWairoa and Mahia-Ruataniwha. He sampled a well close by, and also one at Mr Moloney’s, both of which he pronounced very good. I explained the land was mine, and I was willing to give a site. He said, “ Let it be tho site." The only drawback is that there will be 20 chains of piping wanted for sewage, against three chains at the wharf site and nine chains at tho Roberts site ; but tho wharf site will cost more for roading, etc. (there will be 20 chains of roading wanted, L 4 potchain for fencing, forming and metalling —Road TSO, and three chains piping, say jQ10) than tho 20 chains of piping.

Some time afterwards Mr McGregor came. I drove him round the day after our last meeting, June 4th, and showed him all the sites, and I purposely avoided telling him ''anything Mr McGowan had said or chosen. He unhesitatingly fixed on the cross-roads site also. He also suggested that I should sink a well at once before the weather broke, which I have done at my own risk and expense. Mr McGregor says two inch piping is sufficient for the sewage. Twenty chains is 1820 ft. Mr Brown stated that ho had given sections 1,2, 28, and 29, Block 11., Clyde district (Tynrou division), as a site for the dairy factory, and would formally deed the same to the Company. Mr Shaw moved, and Dr Somerville seconded —That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded t.o Mr Brown for his generosity. —Carried.

On the motion of Mr Shaw, seconded by Mr Bennett, the directors decided to accept the offer of Mr Brown. The directors then went into committee on the question of the erection of the factory, and the tender of Mr P. Wilson (.£BlOl was accepted, subject to certain reductions which will probably reduce it by abcut £SO more.
