COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of tho Cook County Council was held to discuss several Tolago Bay matters. Mr W. F. Haie wrote with regard to the following : —(1) To proclaim gorso in terms of the Noxious Weeds Act ; (2) That the road surveyed through the Mangatuna No. 1 block by the Engineer be forthwith taken ; (o) To draw attention to the state and management of the Toiago Bay public pound ; (4i That as the matter is one of great importance to himself, the initiatory stops to the taking of land for an approach to tho Tolago Bay bridgo, on the north side of tho rirer, be at once taken.
Cr HardiDg thought tho gorso would have to be proclaimed in tho whole of the county as a noxious weed. It had been here for tho last 27 years to his knowledge, and had not spread much. Tho Chairman did not think gorse was a nuisance in any other riding but Tolago, and perhaps thoso who knew the riding intimately would give their views. Cr Clayton asked if Mr Hale’s opinions woro representative of the Tolago Bay people.
Cr Shorratt did not think that the sottler3 in Tolago Biding wished to take action. It did not affect the outlying settlers.
Cr Harding considered that to remove the gorso from the township would improve its appearance.
Cr Sberratt said there was gorse at Tiuiroto and elsewhere in the county, and no one thought of cutting it.
Cr White remarked that he did not want gorse proclaimed a noxious weed ail over tho district.
Tho Clerk stated that there v/as JE7 IGs 9(1, accretions of 2.4 years available for expenditure on blocks 18, .1.9, and 20, Tolago township. In 1898 Tl 4 WEIB OXponded. The sections had all been sold, Dnt tho road was tho trouble, tho chain and a-half being covered. On tho motion of Cr Gruy, it was decided to expend tho money in hand, JC7 IDs 9d. Tho Clork stated that no reply had been received from the Public Works Department in regard to the Tolago bridge. He had received a Jetl-or from Mr Holder stating that Tolago settlers considered the Council were neglecting them, and had replied that the plans had not come to hand.
Cr Harding : "We cannot do anything in regard to tho approaches until we know where the bridgo will be.
Cr White : Has tbo timber arrived for it yet ?
Cr Harding: They have not got any tenders so far.
The Clork: Tho money has been available for three months.
Cr White : The Council arc not to blame for the delay. Cr Harding said the Council should assist the Tolago Bay people to bring the bridge question to a satisfactory end, The Clerk stated tho Mangatuna petition was in process, and Cr Sherratt had undertaken to attend to the question of the pound.
