Obituary : Dr. Wright, one of the earliest medical practitioners of Auckland.
An unemployed difficulty .is likely to arise unless the rush of Australian immigrants lessens. Since January, the Labor Department has provided employment for 811 men, principally on new railways. The openings on the latter have ceased for a time, and new arrivals flood the city, where employment is scarce. The immigrants are mostly unsuited for country work, and the Labor Inspector warns them against arriving in the ,colony in the dead of winter, penniless, as many have done recently* WANGANUI, last night. At the annual meeting of the Caledonian Society last evening, on the motion of Mr R. E. Bruce, President, the following resolution was carried : “That the Caledonian Society of Wanganui wish to give articulate expression to the gratitude which they feel to the French press for the chivalrous delicacy of their attitude and procedure in connection with ' the tragic death of General Macdonald, and also to give expression to 'a hope that the magnanimity of our ancient allies will not be forgotten by the Caledonian race in years which are to come.” A copy of the resolution is to be forwarded to the French Consul at Auckland.
