AUCKLAND, last night.

The Harbor Board has resolved that immediate steps lie taken to secure a share ot the work ot refitting the warships Katoouiba, Wallaroo, and Mildura, which is estimated to cost twenty thousand pounds, and in view of the large expenditure on Calliope dock, to put it in a position to do such work. The Harbor Board has granted Toonian and Company a refund of Wharfage on two hundred eases of oranges per Kotokino, condemned by the Government Inspector. It, was stated that the inspection here is too rigorous. In one instance four hundred cases of fruit from the Islands were condemned for one bad orange. It is also staled that fruit condemned here has been sent to Wellington, and passed there. Tile Countess of Banfurly, Lady Constance Knox, and Captain Alexander leave by the Ngapuhi this afternoon to spend a few days at New Plymouth on their way to Wellington. A veterans’ guard of honor will attend their departure from Auckland railway station. The Governor goes South to-morrow. NAPIER, last night.

At the Police Court this morning, Uarrv Lee was committed for trial on a charge of stealing £26. Harry Ward pleaded guilty to a similar charge, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. HAWERA. last night. Three youths, named llawkins, Rountree, and Me Niven were to-day charged with burglarious entry. On the suggestion of counsel, the charge was altered to one of theft, and accused then pleaded guilty, and were committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence.

MARTON, last night. John .Jefferson, h well-known settler of ibis district, died suddenly at the residence of his brother this morning. Deceased was in town yesterday, and appeared to be in robust health. Judgment. Was given in the Supreme Court this morning in the action Sainsbury v. Tearc. a claim by Sainslmry to he declared joint owner with defendant in certain local property of some value, and also that lie is partner with Teare in his practice as a doctor. Judgment went for

CHRISTCHURCH, last mgnt, Mr Justice Denniston allowed the appeal tit a married man named Ramble from the decision of the Magistrate, that he was the putative father of the child of his servant girl, willi costs. The Education Board lias decided to apply for the Minister’s sanction to tlie conversion of the West Christchurch school into a district high school. Only one member opposed the matter, and he contended that the youth of Christchurch were to get secondary education costing Lli per annum whilst those in other centres, where the Government scheme had been adopted by the existing high schools, got secondary education costing .Lib per annum. Other members contended I here was a necessity fur different classes in high schools. DUNEDIN, last night.
