Sawmillers and Arbitration

“SQUARING” BREACHES.

By Telegraph J/redS Association. Wellington, last night.

A largo deputation of sawmillers from various parts of the colony waited on the Premier to-night in regard to tho manner in wliieh tho Arbitration Act was being worked. Tho deputation asked that amendments should be introduced to prevent any official of a union receiving anything but a fixed salary to provent fines from being awardod to unions, and to proven! the privato settlement of breaches of awards. It was pointed out that tho secretary of one Union, who admitted receiving no salary from the organisation, had recently visited a number of districts and personally collected a large sum iu fines, and stirred up a groat deal of irritation. These fines went to the secretary. The Premier agreed that private settlements of this kind wero undesirable. The law might bo amended to mako it a ponal offence for anyone to square breaches of award iu this way. The best way to stop abuses of tho kind would bo to appoint inspectors of awards who would be Government officials.
