A slander net,ion, in which Robert. Cogliili claimed BntJl damages for slander from Frank Wilkinson, chemist., was concluded to-day. Wilkinson had gone to the shop of Rutherford, grocer, who sometimes employed Cogliili lo go through the books, and told him tiie circumstances connected with the disappearance of a LI-note from Ihe till in his Kensington shop about (lie time Cogliili was behind llie counter. Using the telephone, Rutherford told Cogliili and others, and according to his evidence Wilkinson told him that ho was morally certain the note had luji'ii I alien by Cagliill, and |ii« daughter, who was at a desk behind I lie screen, corroborated Rutherford i,, tin's. Wilkinson, who was unaware. of the presence of the daughter stated that he. only related the circumstances to Rutherford, hut denied actually charging Cogliili with the theft.
The jury. al,t ‘ r a k.ing retirement, returned with a verdict for Cogliili for one farthing damages, and costs, but, on it being pointed out that they eon Id not award costs, but that ,i. verdict, for -.lds would carry costs, they retired again, and came hack with a verdict for ins.
