TRAM WRECK

OVER A 40FT. EMBANKMENT, INTO THE OCEAN. (Per R.M.S. Veil I ura at, Auckland.) •SAN FRANCISCO, June 1. Another serious tram accident occurred in California on May 30th, though by some miracle no one was killed. The ,South Beml Overland passenger train, which left ,San Francisco on Saturday morning at eight o’clock, was wrecked at Punta Gorda, fifteen miles huluw Santa Barbara, at eight, o’clork in Iho evening. The train was running at, a high rate of speed, when the dining-car left the rails, pulling the parlor car and one coach over an embankment forty feet high and into the ocean below. The surf was rolling in, and the occupants of the cars narrowly escaped being drowned in their shocked and wounded condition. Forty persons were injured, hut none will die. The uninjured labored heriucally. in rescuing those who were hurt. This work was attended with great difficulty. A spread rail was the cause of the accident.
