Mr Chauncey Depew, in an interview with the St. James's Gazette, discussing Mr Chamberlain's scheme, asserts that America recognised that every country was entitled to adopt the system most suitable to its interests. America would not like Canadian wheat fields built up in opposition to hers, and undoubtedly would consider some way of striking a balance, probably all she wants, by entering a scheme of reciprocity. The development oi commerce lies in the exploitation of tho East. Therefore America cannot permit any Power to monopolise China or any other port of the East. In tho commercial race Britain’s colonies must be taken into account. They would develop a future if they got men of initiative aud grit-
