OFFENSIVE PLACARDS.

RIMMER AND TTIE CIIURCII OP ROME. PLACARDS TORN PROM WINDOW BY CROWD. (Per Press Association., AUCKLAND, last night. In connection with an exhibition of placards offensive to the Church of Rome, Seth L. Rimmer was charged under section eight of sub-section 3 of the Justice of the Peace Act, that, lie did exhibit an offensive writing. Mr Stewart appeared for accused. Sub-inspector Black reported as to the facts of the case, and asked for a remand until to-morrow, which was granted. Mr Stewart asked that bail be allowed.

Sub-Inspector Black said that if bail was allowed accused, he would he deterred from showing that it was a matter calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. Mr Stewart said that so far as the matter was sub-judice, Mr Rimmer would undertake not to do so.

Sub-Inspector Black said that other placards were torn out of the window by the crowd and destroyed. Mr Rimmer : I wisli to say this, that the indictment is not, correct.

His Worship said that the steps were taken in the interest of defendant himself, on the ground that ho might he injured by the crowd. He would allow bail to defendant.

The Sub-Inspector said that if defendant went back and repeated the offence, there would be a disturbance. Tile, police had asked defendant to take the placards out of his window, and he had refused to do so.

His Worship granted hail in two sureties of fifty pounds. The bail was forthcoming.
