FIRE IN WELLINGTON.

A fire occurred about ten o’clock this morning in the Union Steamship Company’s offices, a two-storied building at the corner of Customhouse Quay and Johnston street. It appears to have started in the room used by the Chairman of Directors when in Wellington, and spread to the correspondence room adjoining. Both of these rooms were considerably damaged by fire and water, and the manager’s room was damaged by smoke. Tbe progress of the fire was checked by the fire-proof doors, but the main portion of tho buiidiog has been a good deal injured by smoke. The total damage is roughly estimated at .£IOOO. A quantity of marine stores, stationery, and other stock kept on the upper floor practically escaped. The insurance on the building is £4OOO, distributed as follows ; New Zealand £750, Sun £3OO, National £750, Commercial Union £SOO, Standard £IOOO, South British £7OO. Tbe stock was insured for £SOOO, as follows : New Zealand £1250, Sun £2OO, National £250, London and Lancashire £IOOO, Royal Exchange £SOO, Royal £IOOO, South British £3OO. The fire i 3 supposed to have been caused through the bursting of a kerosene stove.
