Christchurch, last night,
The Colonial Secretary refused a totalisator permit to trie North Canterbury Steepiechaao Club, which intends altering the annual meeting to July I‘Jth. The Amberiey-Canterbury A. and P. Association propose to attempt tn revive a winter show. Merchants and others a ill be asked to give a guarantee to cover any loss that might result, as was done iu the case of the Palmerston tlhow. A subcommittee was set up to consider aud report on the advisability of holding a winter show in 190-1, and to confer with the district Association on the matter. \V. Blake, town clerk of New Brighton, died this morning. Ho came to this province in 1863, and was engaged in the Engineer’s Department of the Provincial Government in the opening up of roads on tho West Const at the time of tho I'UHh 00 tho gold fields. Ho was subsequently engaged by the general Governnient in telegraph and railway construction.
