EAST COAST NEWS.
TOKO MAUD BAY,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
There is likely to bo some little competition for the blocks of land now open at tho Mata. The values put upon the land are altogether-too high when every thing is taken into consideration, -there are many thousands of acres in this eoi 'ity VVaiapu, that wero the Government'to give to settlers free, with proper preeautions as to improvements arid residence, the land would be quite dear enough by the time it was brought into a
atutn of profit. We aro having very cold weather, ami feed everywtiere is very short. Stock tins winter, as things look at present, will have a hard time. The football match played here on Saturday, between Tolago liay and Tuparoa, was a keenly contested game from start to finish, Tolago Bay winning by elovon points to nil. The most conspicuous playors on tho Tolago Hay side lor du.-in ing play wero Reynolds, Rangi, King and Murphy, Reynolds in particular showing good form. W. McNeil, as full back, did well although lie did not get many opportunities. For Tuparoa Hicks, Ready, Woods, Duff, Walker sen. and jure, and Tyldons (II). All did well, especially the former. When this team has had more practise together it will take a lot ot boat ing, containing, as it does, ho many old hands at tho game. Huth sides wore loud in { Rise of the referee, Mr J’ v/hu filled the position to tho letter. The Tokomaru team did well against Waipiro, playing as they did without four of their best mon, who wero unable to get away. This game also was contested in a spirited manner, resulting in a draw. X noticed some of the Waipiro players not playing in thoir proper colors. This is not in keeping with the rosolution passed at the meeting of the Union. Great interest is being taken iri the game, and a good all round team may bo expected in Gisborne from the Coast before the close of the season.
WAIPIKO V. TOKOMARU
The first match for the East Coast clip was played hero to-day, when ,Tokoiuu.ru met Waipiro. Tokomaru kicked oil, and some good play followed, A good pass from Williams to Dull enabled the latter to draw first blood for Waipiro. Williams took Ihe kick, but failed to add to ,tln- score. .The play became fast on resuming. Waipiro came at the fine with great dash, and Manuel crossed Ihe rubicon, but a score was disallowed. The game continued jfast and exciting, first one siile and then the other attacking. 'the first spell ended in favor of Waipiro by IS points to nil. Past pla continued in the second spell. Waipiro compelled their opponents to lorce several limes, hut Tokomaru retaliated with a loose rush which took I,hc hall right down the field, and ended in White scoring. The kick at goal failed, and the scores were equal. Exciting [day followed. 'I he Waipiro forwards had the advantage in Ihe loose work, but the 'lokolii.iru vanguard counterbalanced this by heating their opponents in the scrums. Excitement ran high to the close, hut neither side succeeded in adding to their score, and a draw was Ihe result ol one of the hirest matches ever witnessed on the Past Coast. Waipiro proved by their display that, with a little practice and able coaching, they will he hard nuts to crack for the Cup. A. B. Williams arm W. Duff were the best of a good lot of hacks, while .1. N. Williams, Johnston, and Manual were the best of 1 he forwards. For Tokomaru, Murphy and Alberts of the hacks, played well, and White and Potae were the most conspicuous of all even lot ol forwards. Tin, Rev. (). Fil/.gerahl gave every ,satisfaction as referee, while Messrs i\. S. Williams and A. Durrani were capable line-umpires.
