By Telegraph —Press Association. Auckland, last night. The citizens’ presentation to Lady Runfurly will consist of two handsome portrait paintings of Maori ladies from tho brush ol Mr C. F. Goldie. Dunedin, last night. Tho special committee of the City Council appointed to inquire into tho alleged disorganisation of the engineering department submitted a report to-night.-The committee camo to the conclusion that Ward street was not pitchod ill accordance with specifications ; that there was a great want of oversight; that adoquato steps were not taken by the department to see that tho work was proporly and efficiently inspected during its progress ; that no one appears to havo understood he was instructed to watch progress of the contract, an omission which throws the onus of the faulty way in which tho work was performed on the city engineer. The committee recommend that in luturo important contracts an inspector bo appointed. The report was adopted. Tho memorial to fallen soldiors was unveiled at Palmerston in tho presence of a largo gathering by Mrs Gotv, wife of tho Mayor. Addresses wero delivered by Mr T. Mackenzie and others. The monument consists of a handsome carved carrara marble figure of Zealandia holding a wreath in her left hand, the other pointing skyward, surmounted by a block of marble, beautuully moulded, on which is inscribed the mimes of the fallen soldiers. The whole is supported by buses of bluestone. The total height is 10 feet, tho figure being G feet. The cost was defrayed mostly by shilling subscriptions. Wellington, last night.
