THE TOWN CLOCK.

WIICKid IS IT ?

The following lelter was read at the Borough Council meeting last evening from Mr Arthur id. Williams! “ 1. beg to thank you for your letter of March sth, enclosing cheque for IBs, for which I am much ob-

liged. i expect by this time you will have the clock erected and at work. (Laughter.) I shall be much interested to hear if it gives satisfaction. I should like some day to have a photograph of the new Post O/lice, showing the clock. I regret that owing to the rush caused by my changing my residence and taking up my new duties in London, I have not acknowledged your letter of January 21, in which you were kind enougli to convey to me the thanks of your Council. Will you please assure them that it has given me file greatest pleasure to he able to assist in procuring such a good clock for the town with which our family have been associated for so many years.” Councillors reciprocated the good wishes expressed.

“ How is the clock getting on ?” asked Cr Hepburn. “ It lias struck,” replied Cr Jones jocularly. Cr Somervell suggested that it was “ in quod.” *■ Not in quod,” said the Mayor, “ only on probation.” *' They are going to turn it out, 1 ■believe,” chimed in the Town Clerk. Cr Hepburn said that representations were *to have been made to the Postmaster-General. He has not got hack to Welling-

ton yet.” replied the Mayor. Cr Lysnar : Why not send him a wire ?

“ I would send him a wire every day.” said Cr Hepburn, whereat tho Councillors laughed. The Mayor explained that he had interviewed the Hon. J. Carroll on the subject, and that gentleman had promised to confer with the Post-inaster-General in Wellington and arrange matters. Rut that Minister was not yet in Wellington. Cr Lysnar : I move that your Worship wire to him and ask him to expedite matters. His Worship : Very well, I will do so to-morrow. Cr Lysnar : It is only fair t-o the people who subscribed that something should be done. The Mayor said that the delay was unreasonable. He knew of no reason that could he given for it. Cr Morrison : Flo one seems to know the cause of it. The Mayor said that lie had several times spoken on the subject to Mr Armstrong, hut that gentleman did not know the reason for the delays
