FOOTBALL 0N IHE COAST-
RUGBY UNION FORMED
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A mooting of delegates from football clubs on the Coast was held at the Te Puka Hotel, Tokomaru Hay, on Saturday evening, with a view of establishing a union on the Coast. The following delegates v/ero present : —Messrs M. Murphy and G. Reynolds, To I ago; Fairlio and Earle, Tokomaru Ray ; Woods and Ta.ylor, Tuparoa ; A. Hurrrant and Rev. 0. Fitzgerald, Waipiro. Tho Rev. Fitzgerald was voted to tho chair. Air J. Thornton was elected secretary for tho meeting. In reply to tho Chairman, Air Earle stated he had wired to tho New Zealand
Rugby Union, and bad received the following reply from Mr A. C. Norris, Hon. Sec.“ln reply to your wire of a recent date, it will be necessary to apply for affiliation, stating tho number of teams under your proposed union, and your application will first be dealt with by tho Management Committee of the Now Zealand Union, and if satisfactory will bo placed before a special general meeting for endorsement. This proooduro is in accordance with the New Zealand Rugby Union bye-laws. Unless your Union is likely to be a fairly strung one, f would suggest for its consideration the advisability of affiliating as u sub-union to a union already affiliated to, the New Zealand Union. Tliis would bo, I presume, the Poverty Hay Union. Under this arrangement all matters affecting your sub-uniou would bo considered by tho duly registered union (say. Poverty Ray), with a right to appeal through such union to tho Now Zealand Union, if occasion arose.” Tbo Chairman remarked that that was the difficulty of forming a sub-union. It would bo bettor for them to go alouo if possible. Mr Earle stated that they wero stronger than Poverty Bay, and was sure there would be no trouble iu affiliating straightout.
It was agreed to write tho New Zoaland Union, to obtain full particulars, aud also feus for affiliation. On the proposition of Mr M. Alurphy, seconded by Air H. Fairlio, it was agreed that the union be known as tho Waiapu
Rugby Union. It was agreed that two delegates bo sent from each club to tho union. With reference to tho fees for affiliation of clubs to tho uniun, it was agreed that two guineas each club bo paid, Air Pettie and tho Rev. Fitzgerald wore highly eulogised for their kindnoss in offering trophies. Air Thornton announced that Mr W. Oates had informed him that ho intended
giving a banner to tho winning club, to bo bold for onoyoar, which was rcceivod with applause.
Tbo election of officers resulted as follows :—l’residont, Rev. 0. Fitzgerald ; VicoTrcsidents, Alessrs T. S. Williams, A. B. Williams, A. Reeves, and E. Cotterill ; Chairman, Itev. Fitzgerald ; Secretary and Treasurer, Air J. Thornton ; Alanagement Committee, Alessrs Woods, Durrant, M. Murphy, and J. Thornton.
Tho usual rules for the formation of Union were agreed to and passed by the meeting. Air Woods, in proposing a voto of thanks to gentlemen who had so kindly consented to givo trophies to tho Union, stated that thoy were all “ old sports,” and that thoy had a right to bo thankful to havo such men on tho Coast that worked in tho interest of sport. The motion was soconded by Air Durrant, and carried with acclamation.
A hearty vote of thanks to tho chairman concluded a very enthusiastic
meotmg. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. At a subsequent meeting of the management committee, consisting of Itev. O. Fitzgerald (chairman), Messrs Woods, A. B. Durrunt, M. Murphy, and J. Thornton. It was agroed that tho Union’s ■ representative colors bo rod and black jerseys, whito knickers, navy blue stockings, and black scull caps, with red stripes. The boundaries for each club woro detiued as follows :—Tuparoa to consist of the Tuparoa station boundaries with Keporua inclusive, or tho north ; Waipiro to consist of the back stations with AVharcponga, Hiruhavanoa, and Mukarika inclusive ; Tokomaru of all stations iu the locality, including Waiparo ; Tolago Bay from south of Waipare to tho north of tho Waimoko river.
Tho following colors woro agroed to : Tuparoa, red and black; Waipiro, blue aud black ; Tokomaru, black and white ; Tolago, black. The following referees woro appointed : Messrs Wilson, Buchanan, J. Murphy, K. S. Williams, A. B. Williams, and llev. F’iUgerald. is was resolved that tho competition consist of two rounds, and the following fixtures tor the first round were agreed to : Juno li.—Tolago v. Tuparoa, at Tokomaru ~ 0, — Waipiro v.Tokomaru, at Takapau „ 20. —Tolago v. Tokomaru, at Tolago „ 20.—-Waipiro v. Tuparoa, at Matahiia July 4.—Tolago v. Waipiro, at Takapau „ 4,—Tuparoa v.Tokomaru at Tokomaru
Iu ad probability a representative team will be sent to Gisborne after the completion of the first round.
