MR CARROLL INTERVIEWED

By; Telegraph—Press Association-! Auckland, last night.

John Hislop aud Jas. liattonbury, members of the Taranaki Laud Board, waited on tho Native Minister, aud stated that tho Government had reserved 100 acres for a township between Ongarue and Te Kuiti, and to make a success of ft a further area of -00 acres would be necessary. This additional area could bo obtained from a Native named Taitako, who was desirous of exchanging his 200 acres for an equal area of Crown land near his homestead. The proposed site for the township was stated to bo near the junction of roads leading to xMokau, also to Wanganui river, aud surrounded by the Crown land recently taken up for selection, totalling 200,000 acros of land, Tho Board had visited tho ground and was unanimous that the offer should be

accepted. Mr Carroll said ho would see if tho land could ho acquired under tho Native Councils Act, and whether the transfer could bo granted, or tho Native’s laud sold and the proceeds bo vested in the land he required. Mr J. 11. Murray asked on bohalf of To Kuiti residents that tho township bo opened up as a freehold. Mr Carroll promised to givo tho matter his consideration.
