By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. Professor J. Macmillan Brown and Mr J. Hay lrnvc been elected to represent the graduates of Canterbury College on the University Senate. Bell, the small pox patient, continues to progress satisfactorily. Ample provision has been made foi* the accommodation ot members of tho crew of tlio Gracchus on Quail Island, and the men express satisfaction with their treatment. Leonard Slieard, convicted .last Thursday on a charge of indecently assaulting a boy, was found not guilty on a similar charge to-day. The foreman stated that, the jurors had considered the question of identity, and were of opinion that there was some slight doubt, of which accused should be given the benefit. His Honor said it was considered best that jurors should not give reasons, and ho was not sure that be should have permitted it in the present case. Three other indictments of indecent assault were allowed to lapse. On last Thursday’s conviction Slieard was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, llis Honor stating he was treating accused as a first offender. I,i the Arbitration Court, in the bakers’ dispute, it was agreed that the award should be made effective within a radius of t ight miles cf Christchurch. Mr Justice Cooper said lie would give the award as soon as possible.
