STRANDING OF MOKAU.

Wellington, last night.
The magisterial enquiry into the stranding of the steamer Mokau, oil tho Manawatu river, at 1.80 on the morning of May Ist, was held to-day. The master attributed tho mishap to having been misled by tho Fox ton light, which ho sighted at midnight in tine weather. Tiie Court found that Captain Craik had not been sufficiently careful in approaching land, that his soundings were unreliable, and that he did not take precautions to ascertain whether they were correct or not. His certificate was suspended for six mouths.
EMPIRE DAY.
Monday, May 25th, Empire Day, is to be proclaimed a public holiday.
FATAL ACCIDENT.
While engaged stripping a roof off a building at Ngahauranga, a carpenter named John Merriony aged 27, stepped on a loose sheet of iron. He fell to the floor below, and died a few iiours later.
FOUND DEAD.
Thomas Hennelly, aged 50, was found dead in a whare at Ngahauranga to-day. Ho had been suffering from dropsy and kidney trouble.
SURVEYORS.
Mr J. E. Thomson and Mr H. Muir have passed the full examination of the New Zealand and Australian Board as surveyors.
