LIGHTERAGE CHARGES.
The following letter from Messrs Kennedy and Evans was read at the meeting of the Farmers’ Union Executive on •Saturday :—We are in receipt of yours of 21st April asking us to consider making a reduction in our lightering rates, to which we reply that yours has bcc-n and is under consideration, but seeing that rates are fixed largely between our employers and ourselves, and in accord with their rates, it will take time to determine, as the rates vary for different classes of goods. However, we desire you to convey to the i
Farmers’ Union our endeavors to meet your wishes as far as possible, but this will require to bn put in accord with others working the port.” It was resolved that the Committee set up in connection with the question of lighterage and harbor tariff wait on the Harbor Board at its next meeting.
