SHOW ENTRIES.

DEBATE ON PULES

At Ihe meeting of the A.- and P. Association on .Saturday, Mr 11. N. Watson moved, in accordance with notice, that the second paragraph of regulation 2 be rescinded. This read: “ Entries, if sent by letter or wired full, will be accepted from outside the Poverty Bay district, provided

they are in the, hands of the secretary three clear days before t lie Show, and on sucii entries double fees shall be charged.” Air Watson •'aid that the rule allowed outside entries to lie received up to within liiree days of the Show, while local entries had to be in by the previous Saturday. Thai, was giving a preference to outsiders at the expense of local exhibitors. It was a knock at Hie young bull class, and ns a large exhibitor he felt sore on tile point, lie staled that the rule bad been passed without proper consideration, members not being aware of it. They were at a disadvantage here in that

they could not spoon-feed and otherwise tend Show stock as they did in Hawke’s Bay. Messrs Witters, McCullough, and himself would not compete under that rule, which was most, unfair. (Hear, hear.) The only argument he had heard in favor of it was that they would have had a dozen more entries last year. People had imported stock before, but they preferred to rely on their own breeding. What would they say if local racing clubs said that local entries must be in a fortnight before, but outside entries could be sent, in close up to the day ? The rule bad come in in some unknown way. and passed without members’ knowledge.

'i’he Secretary explained that the rule bad been adopted after careful consideration, and i\lr Watson was at the committee meeting when the alterations were discussed, and if he did not know of ttic alteration be must either have been inattentive or careless in 1 lie matter.

Mr Witters : lie does not bear you. (Laughter.) Mr Mason : Oh, lie knows ; wc have threshed this out: oiten before. (Laugh ter.) . The President went on to explain bow (lie rule was brought into lorce,

after very careful attention being given to it lie could not understand Mr Watson’s statement in the matter Mr .Smith said he had not understood the rule to he decided m that way at all. _ The Secretary : That is the slip as printed and placed before mcmbcis. Mr Smith : Well, I did not understand it that way. The rule is most

unfair. . , Mr Murphy: If the rule is not satisfactory, cannot we rescind it ? The Secretary :11 must first go before two committee meetings. Mr Martin : Then, why are we threshing it out here ? The Secretary said that would he the first step if they desired the rule altered. . ~ , The President said it was through Mr Watson that the alteration was made. .... Mr Watson was challenging this statement, when there were cries of

“ Order.” . Mr Witters did not mind an equal chance being given to outsiders, but. the entries should close on the same day and no preference he given to outsiders. People simply went and purchased winners to show against, local animals. Knlries should close before the decisions in the IlawKe s

liav Show., the President said that he was ait exhibitor of cattle and sheep, hut U stock could he taken fifty miles into Napier and then the sea trip to Gisborne. and lie judged better than lus, they were welcome to the prize. Mr Macfarlanc considered 'it would, tie a slur on the committee to alter a rule that, had been so carefully con-

siilerod and adopted by a general meet lug. He Had voted or Hio Uile Iteeause it was for the beUerment ot the stock of the district. He nanaled how in Christelntrch every eflnrt was made to bring in winners at the countrv shows. Men were sent out specially to secure them tor exhibition, ami not only were they accepted but the expenses paidMr ' Hood : They are sportsmen. (Hear, hear.) , flnnM ,

Mr Maefarlane : Yes ; I say non l, cramp tlu-m. but let them all eume along. (Applause.) “We understood Mr Watson to object to entries fdr outside slock to lie made up to within two or hrcc davs of the Show, but now it appears that he objects to local people going outside to buy stock, said an other member. Mr Maefarlane . It it is wrong to bring in a bull, why is it not wrong to bring in a horse , , 1 M'l... tirne rillntl Dili of or del.

The motion was ruled out, in oiuci. A letter from Mr Watson in regain to MS fis spent on eiiainpagne lot a dinner, was brought up, hut no action taken on it. One member, who disclaimed having had any or the champagne, facetiously moved that the letter he put under the table, and another member suggested that Mr Watson or someone else should provide some lor that occasion. There being no volunteers, Mr Fright then introduced the subject ot technical schools.
