POVERTY HAY RUGBY UNION. ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the twelfth annual report, of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, read 'at the annual general meeting last evening GenLemen, —in placing before you the twelfth annual report and balance sheet, the Committee congratulate you upon tin- fact that the .standard of fool hall in this district lias been I'opt, up to that of the preceding year Owing to the scarcity of players, R was decided by a sub-committee appointed for that purpose) to amalgamate the Kaiti and City districts, smd consequently there were but three teams entered for the competitions, which for ltic lirsL time were carried out on Victoria Domain. This, however, did not tend in any wav to lessen the keen competition between the districts or the interest taken by tile general public. Senior Cup Contests.—Consequent, upon the reduction in the number of ijst.ricts, five rounds were ordered to ie played ; and, as in the previous season, the issue was in doubt until the last game, when, for the second, -line m succession, West. End proved .'ictorioiis. The win was a well-de-■erved one, and, while congratulating' diem upon their success, ' we desire o express the thanks of the Union o the oilier two Clubs who fought io hard for honors.

Junior Contest. Consequent upon a misunderstanding, this competition tell through—a fact much to be deplored, and one which the Union trusts will not occur again. Rep. Matches.—Our Hawke’s j!a\ neighbors once more visited us, sending up a strong combination. After a first-class game, our colors . were (for the first time since INU7) victorious, and every credit, for tiie magnificent fight they made is due to the following players Williams (captain). Wnitai, .Sheet, Porter, To KeiJUga, Johnson, May, Poananga, Newton, iUoana, and Xiatca. As

showing the keen interest taken by tiie public, the total receipts at this match constituted a record far in excess of any previous takings. For the first time in local football, a junior representative team left our district to try conclusions against Hawke’s Bay. Though beaten, they gave a very fair exhibition, and returned fully determined to turn the tables on the next occasion.

Finance. —Financially, Ihe year has been one of success. The total receipts from all sources were £0!) 11s 'ld and expenditure ;£!M .1 L ad, thus leaving a credit balance of £4 J!)s lid and a liability of £11) odd. Our Hon. Treasurer lias prepared a full statement of the receipts and expenditure, which, when placed before you, and explained by him, will, we feel sure, saLisfy both footballers and tho supporting public that all moneys received by tiie Union have been and are being expended with every care and to the best possible advantage.

General.—As already staled, the Union decided to play all games on Victoria Domain —a step which events fully justilied. The various works which have been carried out during the past year (and which are still

being proceeded with) have been a big drain on the financial resources of the Union, and your committee now feel assured that in a very short time the people of Gisborne will have one of the finest sports grounds in (lie colony.

The memorial to the late Mr T Kirk has now been erected in the

Hamilton cemetery, and bears the following inscription : “In loving memory of Thomas Hverton Kirk, eldest and dearly beloved son of Thomas and Elizabeth Kirk, who departed

this tile at Gisborne, on 20th July, 1001, aged 12 rears. This stone is erected by the footballers of Gisborne and Waikato, as a token of re-

spect to the memory of a comrade who died from injuries received while playing.” Oil behalf of Mr and Mrs

Kirk and family, the Union desire to express their thanks to those who saw lit to honor the memory of their son by the erection of such a "handsome monument. A photo, of the work has been received and is now in the hands of the lion. Secretary, and may he seen hy anyone so desir-

in conclusion, we lender our sincere thanks to those gentlemen who so ably and willingly assisted us' to make the year so successful, to Mr W. Webb for his donation of four

handsome goal-posts, and to the general public for the hearty support accorded us."
