Per Press Association, Nelson, last night. There were very large congregations at St Mary’s Church this morning, when two solemn masses for the repose of the soul of the late Dean Mahoney were celebrated by Father Clancy, who expressed the thanks of the congregation to those wiio, though nut united in the faith, weie blended in common charity, and had shown sympathy with Catholics in the loss of their late beloved pastor. Referring to the place of the Dean’s burial in Ireland he said, “ There lot him sieep the sleep of the just, bis memory bedewed by the tear of the orphan, and hallowed by righteousness.” H. kjwansson, a publican of Richmond, charged with supplying liquor on Sunday, admitted supplying it, but said he believed the person lived more than three miles from the hotel, it was proved that Ire resided only two and a-quarter nines away. The Magistrate said defendant acted straightforwardly, bus hud not taken reasonable precautions to ascertain whether the man resided outside die radius. Defendant was lined 20s and his license endorsed.
Tho 52nil anniversary of the Nolson Baptist Church was celebrated to-night, unci tho new pastor, liev. F. G. Buckingham, was publicly welcomed.
