BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
A spirited contest is promised for the forthcoming municipal election, and the ratepayers will have an excellent list of candidates from which to make their choice. Already the number oi probable candidates amounts to eighteen, and it is likely that some who would not care to stand were only a limited number offering will be inclined to enter the Seld.
The many friends of Mr W. Webb will be pleased to learn that ho has consented to stand as a candidate at the forthcoming borough election. From his address which appears in another column it will be seen that he offers himseif as an independent candidate, his chief aim being to see that there is a fair distribution of expenditure over the whole borough. Hu is a strong advocate of water and drainage, and favors the Waihirere source for water supply. Ho also advocates the bettor lighting of the borough. In regard to borough leases Mr Webb would give a renewal of the leases to the occupants at a fair valuation. In ail matters of a public and social character Mr Webb has shown himself to be possessed of abundant energy, and as a councillor he would be a diligent worker on beliall of the ratepayers. A requisition for the Rev. H. Williams to consent to nomination at the forthcoming borough elections is being largely signed.
Mr 11. Johnston will bo a candidate at the forthcoming borough elections. That gentleman was for many years a councillor, and proved himself a strong man for the position. lie was a careful administrator, but at the same time a progressive member, and it is gratifying to learn that he is again offering his services to the ratepayers. There is no doubt Mr Johnston will receive large support. Mr E. Woollrigd.it, the popular proprietor of the lxecord Beign Hotel, who was asked at the recent meeting of Wost Euders to allow himself to be nominated for the Borough Council, has definitely decided not to come forward on tho present occasion,
The first nomination for the forthcoming election was made yesterday, when Or ii. N. Jones was duly nominated with the Returning Officer, i\lr W. J. Quigley. A very popular nomination from the West End will bo that of Mr Arthur Sawyer. That gentleman has not so fur taken a prominent part in public affairs, hut he is a good practical man, and has had first-class training in administrative matters by his connection with many local organisations.
The following candidates are likely to be nominated to-morrow for the Borough election Messrs J. Colley, J. M. Cummiug, J. East, W. B. Pile, D. Hepburn, J. A. Harding, It. N. Jones, It. Johnston, W. D. Lysnar, A. P. Matthews, T. Morrison, W. Miller, A. Sawyer, J. S. Sheridan, W. O. Sheet, J. Somervell, W. Webb, and J. Whinray.
A MAYOR ELECTED UNOPPOSED.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night, Crs Scott and Maitland have been nominated for the city Mayoralty. There wili be contests iu all the city wards, there being five nominations for each.
Or Gore has been elected Mayor of S Kilda unopposed.
