At a meeting of the Grammar Echoed Board, a letter was received from the headmaster in regard to the New Zealand regulations for the Rhodes scholarships, and objecting to tiio University Senate's proposal that scholarships be open only to those wno had been three years at a University College. The headmaster contended that such restriction was contrary to Mr Rhodes’ intentions. Proitssor Thomas said that the idea of the Committee of the Senate was that the average colonial youth was more likely to derive benefit from Oxford education after passing through a University College than if he went straight to Oxford from school. Sir Maurice O’Rorkc expressed surprise, at the Senate’s recommendation, and moved that Government should be requested not to approve of any regulations debarring all persons except those who have spent three years at a University College from competing for the Rhodes scholarship,. The motion was carried.
