MAORI V. MAORI

DOG-TAX AND REPUTATION

Per Press Association, Masterton, last night. At the district court a libel action was heard wherein Taiawhio to Tau and others claimed £IOO damages from Aporo and Tamahou Mahuhui, writer and publisher respectively, for alleged libel contained in an article published in a Maori .paper at Greytown. The matter arose out of alleged evasion of the dog-tax. Plaintiffs claimed that the article imputed that they as chiefs were disreputable, dishonorable, utterly degraded, and unfit to hold tribal rites. After the case opened the parties conferred. Defendants agreed to pay £ls costs and publish a withdrawal of the words used.
