EXCITING BOAT RACES

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. To-day great interest was evinced throughout the fleet in the race for Admiral Fanshawe’s Cup. Every kind of boat that could raise sail was entered for the contest, each vessel in the squadron sending out several representatives. About thirty boats contested the race, which was over a nine mile course. It was a haudicap event, in service rig, each boat carrying its full complement of men and all gear The interest was largely centred In the Archer's whaler, commanded by Captain Rolleston, as the latter had already won Admiral Beaumont’s cup ; and as it proved, this boat, was the first to get home, followed by thq Lizard’s whaler (in command of Captain Glossop). As the Archer’s was the longer boat, the Lizard’s won on the time allowance. Captain Rolleston is a New Zealander, and was related to the late Hon. W. Rolleston. The Royal Arthur’s pinnace, -under Lieut. Oliver) just heat the flagship’s launch (sailed by Captain Lumsden) for third place. .VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL. The Victoria College Council considered to-night the report of a special committee appointed to investigate the subject of professorships. The question of establishing a chair of civil engineering was deferred, and it was decided that the first professor appointed should be one of mental science. NEW ZEALAND BANDSMEN. A public farewell is to he given to the New Zealand Band which is to leave to-morrow for London by the Corinthic. The members are to be entertained at luncheon.
