BAND ROTUNDA.

In his report to the Gounoii last night the Inspector, Mr J. R. Little, statod tfiut lie had thut afternoon with Mr fi’mneran, architect, visited the Recreation ground to inspect and take over the band rotunda which had been completed that day by Messrs Mackroll and Gulley. Though the contract was a long way behind time, Mr Little considered that it had been well and faithfully earned out acoordiog to specifications. Tne five lamps which had been lilted up to light the rotunda had been taken down, aud wore to be stored at the Borough office until bucU time as the gas mains were laid down to the Recreation ground. Tho reason of this was that there had been so many little things which had been knocked about aud broken since the contract started thut it was thought it would bo safer to remove the lumps until they were wantod. In reply to Cr Kennedy, the Inspector said that there had been no delay in the work, except through the waiting for the cast-iron parts.

Cr Jones said he did not think they should enforce the full penalty, but they should not allow contractors to he three months behind time without in some way marking their sense of disapproval of such delay. They had repeatedly written. to Messrs MackreJl and Colley warning them. There was no need to he hard on the contractors, hut if they allowed sucii delay to pass unchecked they, would have a lot of trouble with contracts,

The Chairman said there was still a deposit of £23 ; perhaps they might let that stand, for a lull meeting to deal with, and pass the other amount Cr Kennedy thought they, should not keep anything baek. The Council had not suffered by the delay, which was simply through the trouble 'in getting the cast-iron. They could not in fairness impose any penalty.

The Chairman agreed that they should mark their sense of the delay by an expression of an opinion, though from what they heard the contractors were not behind except in regard to the ironwork, which could not well be avoided.

The account, £134, was then pas-? sed for payment.
