SHIPMASTERS’ REQUEST.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. A deputation of shipmasters interviewed the Minister of Marine to-day, and asked mat the clause enabling shipmasters to hx fines aud certain penalties for seamen not joining their snips should not bo left out of the Shipping and Seamen’s Bill, as otherwise tho power of the master to enforce discipline on his ship would be considerably reduced. Heavy peualties were provided, the deputation pointed out, against, masters leaving port with more tnau two men short of the full crew, and masters thought they should have some power of making an example of men who did not join their ship.
The Minister of Marine, in replying, suggested that the Court would be a greater deterrent to the seamen than either the officers of the ship or the superintendent. They would have to pay all Court expenses. He wished to properly safeguard the interests of the men and tnose of the shipowners, aud hoped soon to arrive at a decision which would amply meet objections raised by the captains.
