WILLIAMSON’S DRAMATIC COM PANY V. GISBORNE ELEVEN.
Considerable interest was taken in the match played on Wednesday between a team from Williamson’s Dramatic Company and a local eleven, and there was a fair crowd of spectators present on Victoria Domain to witness the play. The ladies attended in largo force. Afternoontea was provided by the local players, and proved most acceptable on the chilly afternoon. A drizzling rain set in towards tho close of the game, and made matters unpleasant for the bowlers and fieldsmen. W. ‘Gibson won the toss from T. W. Lloyd, who captained the Company’s team, and the local men batted first. The local captain took Hodge with him to the wickets, and the pair faced tho bowling of Merriman and Lloyd. When 5 runs were scored, Hodge stopped a straight one from Lloyd with hiß leg, and retired. H. Sharp joined W. Gibson, and scoring became faster, both batsmen getting in some good strokes, though both bowlers were trundling very steadily. With 30 up Sharp was cleverly stumped by Wilson off Merriman. J. Gibson joined his brother, and another fair stand was mado, the pair taking the total to 47, when J. Gibson was run out by a bit of smart fielding by Taylor (substitute). F. Sharp was beautifully stumped by Wilson off Hare, and Porter placod one softly from the same bowler to Gwenn at cover-point. Shortly afterwards, with his score at 27, VV. Gibson was cleanly stumped by Wilson o2 Lloyd. Lang hit hard for a dozen, but none of the others could stand up to the bowling, which was good throughout, and the innings closed for 84. Wilson’s work with the gloves was first-class. His taking of the ball on both sides of the wicket was clean and sure, and he stumped throe men very smartly. With about an hour to bat, the Thespians made a good attempt to force the pace, but the wickets fell rapidly to W. Gibson, whose slows got rid of several batsmen. Porter was scored off freoly. Lloyd, Hollins, and Gwenn batted soundly for their runs, and appeared as if they were going to win the game for their side. Hodge, in three overs towards the finish, took three wickets for 3 runs.
