The Trades and Labor Council resolved to ask the Government 1o appoint a practical miner as inspector in connection with the Northern Gold fields’ arbitration cases.

It is announced that the work of .restoring the Cathedral spire will bo at once begun at a cost of £BBB. Members of the George Rhodes and R. H. Rhodes families have undertaken to find the sum required. The spire was built by the family. This is .the second time restoration has been effected at their expense.

FRUITGROWERS’ ASSOCIATION. The Christchurch Fruit-growers’ Association has passed the following resolution : “ Seeing that no effectual steps are being taken to clear the colony of fruit pests, especially codlin moth, which js being spread over the country wholesale, the Association considers the present system of fruit inspection a complete farce, and the restrictions on imported fruit an injustice to the trade and the whole community ; further, that steps be taken to bring the matter before Parliament, with a view to having the restrictions removed.”
