Mr H. F. Wigrarn has consented to stand for the Mayoralty of Greater Christchurch. The Methodist conference decided to receive a deputation from the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, and an Anglican deputation on Thursday, Committies on homo missions, Synod recommendations, new appointments to foreign missions for the ensuing year were taken to-day. The Chief Justice gave judgment this morning in an appeal by a Sumner hotelkeeper from a decision of the Magistrate, who convicted him of supplying liquor to a traveller who had already had a drink at another hotel, and had boen 35 minutes in the locality. The Judge dismissed the appeal, saying the question of time did not arise. It was pormipsable only for a traveller to obtain refreshments on arrival, and in any case it was not obligatory on the publican to supply liquor. It was cloar tbe traveller had not arrived from a journey, but from another hotel. At the Methodist Conference the lay members of the stationary committee were appointed as follows : T. Allen, J. W. Shackleford, J. Trounsen, Auckland ; W. G. Bassett, \V. Arnbury, Wanganui ; J. Prouse, G. Tiller, Wellington ; G. A. Flesher, S. S. Sehpan, G. H. Blackwell. Canterbury ; E. Itoseveare, J. B. Shacklock, Otago ; J. Boon and E. H. Ponny, Nelson. The conference adjourned at mid-day till Saturday morning, and committees proceed with their work in the meantime.
The University Senate this morning decided to hold the next annual meeting at Wellington, on the third Wednesday of February, 1904, and that a special meeting to receive the reports of the examiner in England ho hold at Christchurch in April. The committee set up to deal with the Rhodes scholarship reported that the scholarship should be made available to those students who have already spent three years’ study at an affiliated college of the New Zealand University. Candidates should ho required to furnish lull ovidoucc of the possession of moral and physical qualifications, also personal popularity. The Recess Committee was appointed to coufer with the Minister of Education ro dotails necessary to giving effect to the foregoing resolutions. The report was adoptod, and the Senate closed.
