WAIROA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent'

The backward spring and indifferent summer weather is a thing of the past, and now we revel in a sub-tropical heat about which we growl sotto voce asserting that “ we would bo all the better for a day’s rain.” As a general public we aro hard to pleaso. Now when provisions aro needed and wool is filling our sheds awaiting transit, that bar at the entrance to our river, with a perversity almost human, blocks us io, and the Tangaroa out. But as there is never a bad but . might bo worse, the steamer, under the genial influence of Father Neptune, is able to land cargo on the beach which tends to raise our spiritual thermometer a few degrees above “ bad bar and heavy sea 1” Tho Native Land Court still holds on the even tenor of its way, and our Maori friends come and go and thus the average population of Tenakoe street is maintained.

Our worthy Magistrate, Mr Barton, is once more in our midst to settle our petty grievances and to deal with the more serious debt cases. The case of Winter Bros. v. tho Town Board has been decided in favor of the latter. This week we have had our tympanums gratified by the sound of wedding bells, when Mr William Coker, one of our business men, led to the Hymeneal altar Miss Clara Bax, the eldest, daughter of Mr T. B. Bax, of this town. To say that tho wedding passed off without a hitch would scarcely bo a complimentary allusion to the solemn ceremony, as the liev. Mr Raeburn, who officiated, usually “ maks siccar ” in matters matrimonial. Mrs Coker, who is an established favorite in

the town, chiefly owing to her helpful mannor and many other good qualities, was tho recipient of many useful and valuablo presents, showing that we are not slow to appreciate and reward th» deserving. Mr Coker likewise was not overlooked in tho matter. So from the handsome pianoforte downwards the array of good things betokened in a substantial way that tho newly-married couplo start a new career followed by the good wishes of their friends.

Our dairy factory directorate, consequent on tho discovery of an excellent water supply by Mr 0. Roberts, are up and doing, determined to blot out from its escutcheon the chargo of lethargy and taihoa-ism which has hitherto obtained. Further, negotiations of a practical naturo aro being carried on between that body and somo gentlemon from tho West Coast which is likely to culminate in something tangible. Lot us hopo so. We are looking forward with somo degree of hopo to the report of Mr Napier Bell, C.E., on the best means of dealing with our river entrance, and only trust that tho scheme may bo such as will

commend it to the Government and to tho ratepayers.

Messrs T. Browne and A. Poyzor have been elected new members of our Harbor Board. Feb. 26.
