CRICKET.
FIRST TEST MATCH. Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. Tho first test match between England and New Zealand began at Lancaster Park to day. Tho weather was wet and overcast, but fine till noon, when after a
couple of overs had been bowled showers delayed play till after lunch. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat. Fisher stood out of tho Now Zealand team, and Leatham out of the English team. Tho wicket was slow, but easy. The weather gradually cleared, and remained fine all the afternoon. The Now Zealand team compiled 164 in their first innings, aud the Englishmen had one wicket down for 14 when play closed. Following arc the scores :

The Hawke's Bay team arrived by, the steamer this morning, and after' breakfast, will be driven to the ground, play, commencing at ten o’clock .slump. The local eleven Journey out by the morning Lrain. Spectators may leave. Oisborne by the 8 a.m. train, by Mr Sinclair's coach ai, 10.3(1, or by the special train at 1.30. The Hawke's Bay eleven are : Yrotl, Toinoana, Orr, B. Cotterill, Wi iams, L. Take, Gardiner, White, Baker', Ilindmarsh, and Greensidc. Troll, White, Cotterill, Gardiner, Orr, Williams, Ilindmarsh, and Baker have, previously represented the province and the others are all good men. A first-class match should he witnessed to-day.
